CARTIF Showcases D-HYDROFLEX at HYDRO 2024 Conference

Last November, CARTIF had the privilege of representing the D-HYDROFLEX project at the prestigious International Conference and Exhibition HYDRO 2024, held in Graz, Austria. This renowned event brought together around 1,200 delegates from over 75 countries, providing a global platform to discuss critical topics in hydropower, dam engineering, and pumped-storage development.

The conference featured 30 technical sessions where experts explored the potential and challenges of the energy transition, advancements in technology, safety, risk management, project financing, and environmental sustainability. Austria, known for its rich hydropower heritage, generates about 60% of its electricity from hydro sources, making it an ideal venue for this dynamic exchange of ideas.

CARTIF’s Contribution: Session 17 – Digital Solutions for Hydropower

CARTIF participated in Session 17: Digital Solutions for Operation and Maintenance of Existing Hydropower, presenting a groundbreaking paper on the hybridization of hydroelectric plants with hydrogen production systems. This innovative research aims to enhance renewable energy integration and improve grid flexibility.

The study examines two scenarios:

  1. Small-scale micro-hydro plant
  2. Larger seasonal hydroelectric station

Both scenarios are coupled with photovoltaic systems and hydrogen storage technologies. Using TRNSYS simulations, the study evaluated the performance of these hybrid systems under real-time market conditions.

Key Findings

  • Larger hydroelectric plants demonstrated greater energy output and higher revenues, especially when integrated with hydrogen storage systems.
  • Hydrogen storage proved to be a critical component, enhancing the flexibility and stability of the hybrid systems.
  • The research highlights a promising approach to maximize renewable energy usage and contribute significantly to decarbonization goals.

Words from CARTIF

Reflecting on the experience, Sergio Rodríguez Carro, a CARTIF researcher, shared:

“It has been an honor to participate in HYDRO 2024, a benchmark event that unites leading researchers in the hydroelectric sector to address critical issues shaping the energy future. Presenting the European project D-HYDROFLEX, which focuses on hybrid systems modeling, was a remarkable opportunity to showcase how these technologies can enhance the flexibility and efficiency of hydroelectric plants. Optimization and digitalization are vital for advancing the energy transition, and I am thrilled to see these efforts gaining the recognition they deserve.”

Advancing Hydropower Innovation

The HYDRO 2024 conference underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling the challenges of the energy transition. CARTIF’s participation highlights the critical role of innovative projects like D-HYDROFLEX in shaping a sustainable energy future.
